Thousands turn out to march for immigration reform

MILWAUKEE (WITI) – Thousands of immigration reform advocates marched through Milwaukee on Wednesday, May 1st carrying signs and chanting “si se puede,” which means “yes we can,” with the belief that this is the most politically opportune moment in decades to achieve immigration reform legislation.

“We have a great optimism this year that we’ll actually get some kind of reform done. The political climate has shifted. Before, it was always friction. It was always hard for us to get any good legislation,” Primitivo Torres with Voces de la Frontera said.

Democrats and Republicans in Congress agree on the need to address the issue.

“Paul Ryan was an original co-sponsor of comprehensive immigration reform,” Luis Gutierrez (D – Chicago) said.

Gutierrez says Ryan could hold the key to passing a new law.

Summerfest announces Miller Lite Oasis headliners

MILWAUKEE (WITI) — Summerfest officials are excited to announce the highly anticipated lineup of headliners slated for the Miller Lite Oasis during Summerfest 2013.

The Miller Lite Oasis will feature the following headliners:

Spring - When a Young Dog's Fancy Turns to...Walkabouts?

Spring - When a Young Dog's Fancy Turns to...Walkabouts?

Spring has taken a while to arrive, but it does feel good now that it has finally arrived. With spring, in come the kittens, the stray dogs and wildlife. HAWS’ Animal Rescue Team is busy on the road!

Stray dogs “happen.” They sneak out when the kids run out the door, they  find open gates and go for walks in the spring sunshine – just like we do. A friendly dog looks for company where ever it can find it, so with more people outside, more dogs are enticed into excursions. I own huskies that are opportunists, and will run just for the joy of it! If you are not quick at the gate, the chase is on. Stray dogs happen. The most diligent owner can be challenged.

Shortfall in trans. fund could delay critical freeway projects

MADISON (WITI) — Wisconsin has big plans for fixing its highways but no way to pay for them. A massive shortfall in the state’s transportation fund means big road projects in the Milwaukee area won’t get done anytime soon.

The state’s Joint Finance Committee (JFC) addressed the issue during a public hearing on Tuesday afternoon, April 30th. Officials say the transportation fund has a $63.4 million shortfall over the next two years.

“I don’t know how we can do all the projects when we have such a big deficit.  We just don’t have the money,” said Republican Senator Alberta Darling, co-chair of the JFC.

The JFC is reviewing Gov. Scott Walker’s plan that would save millions by delaying construction on the Ryan Road Interchange in the I-94 widening project, delaying the Zoo Interchange work, and decreasing payments for maintenance on the Amtrak Hiawatha train line from Milwaukee to Chicago.
